Anxiety has reached epidemic proportions.  Many people suffer from feelings of fear and constant anxiety or are simply overwhelmed by the stress and demands of everyday life.  In this Public Talk and 5-Part Series we will explore meditations and ways of thinking derived from Buddha’s teachings that will help us to become fearless in the face of adversity and deal with our negative emotions more confidently and effectively.

ABOUT THE TALK

Many people are plagued by obsessive, worrisome thoughts that can leave us feeling depressed and exhausted.  We all want to be free of anxiety and stress, but how can we do this when we are gripped by these painful thoughts and feelings?

By following Buddha’s advice and through the practice of meditation, we can finally find freedom from anxious thoughts and experience inner stability.  With a calm, clear mind we can make good decisions and be of benefit to our friends and family

During this talk Gen Kelsang Zopa will explain Buddha’s scientific methods for releasing us from painful, unhappy thoughts and feelings, thus enabling us to enjoy the freedom of mental peace. With a peaceful mind, we can find joy in our lives.

Oct 28  – Dealing with Stress and Worry

Discover how we can use Buddhist meditation and positive thinking to transform every moment of our daily life.  If we train in meditation our mind will become more and more peaceful, and we shall experience purer and purer forms of happiness. Eventually we shall be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Nov 4 –  Attachment, Craving & Desire

Attachment is like a rope that binds us to a life of suffering.  It keeps us investing our energy in things that can’t give us the real lasting peace and happiness we crave.  Our attachment keeps us bound in unhealthy mental habit patterns, repeating mistakes that undermine our personal growth.  Learn the meditations Buddha taught to free our mind from attachment and allow us to enjoy a life of real fulfillment. 

Nov 11 –  The Habits of Happy People

Happiness is something that each one of us has the potential to experience.  Sadly, our habitual ways of thinking often take us in the opposite direction.  We will explore several meditations and ways of thinking that uplift the mind.  And we’ll learn how, by carrying these with mindfulness into our day, we can maintain a light, joyful attitude, no matter what life throws our way.

Nov 18 – Healthy Mind, Happy Life

In this class we will explore the qualities of a healthy mind and how these qualities can be enhanced through formal meditation practice and a special awareness when we are not meditating.  We will learn Buddha’s scientific methods for releasing us from painful, unhappy thoughts and feelings, thus enabling us to enjoy the freedom of mental peace. With a peaceful mind, we can find joy in our lives.

Nov 25 – Freedom from Painful Emotions

During this meditation class, we will explore specific toxic minds called delusions and learn how to apply their virtuous mental opponents. We will discover why these negative states of mind arise and how, through meditation practice, to eliminate them. In this way we will come to experience a deep, satisfying emotional freedom, becoming the person we wish to be – joyful, confident and loving.

Janet is a member of the Foundation Program at Bodhichitta Buddhist Centre and has been studying and practicing  Kadampa Buddhism for over 15 years.  Janet enjoys sharing her practical experience of how helpful Buddha’s advice and meditation techniques are in our everyday lives.

Q. Do I need to be a Buddhist to attend?
No. Anyone can learn basic meditation and experience the benefits that come from having a peaceful mind.
Q. Do I need to have any experience?
No. Everyone is welcome, including beginners. All you need is the wish to improve yourself and the quality of your life.
Q. How should I dress?
No special clothing is required, come as you are.
Q. Is there any physical exercise involved?

No. The classes focus on meditation and teachings alone. You can choose to sit on a chair or meditation cushion.

Q. Is it necessary to book in advance?

We recommend registering in advance. Payment in advance saves you money and guarantees you a place. Advance registration will end at noon the day before the first event (Jan 18) or when capacity is reached, whichever comes first.
We have seats available for the Library Talk.  Please arrive by 9:45am.
