Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day

Tuesday, June 4, 2024

Join us in offering our faith, and remembering kindness.

June 4 marks the anniversary of Buddha Shakyamuni’s’s first teaching in this world and also the birthday of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

We celebrate Buddha’s teaching, called “Turning the Wheel of Dharma”, and increase our appreciation and wish to put these teachings into practice.  Because of the great kindness of Buddha in turning the Wheel of Dharma, the people of this world have the opportunity to follow a spiritual path to the permanent inner peace of enlightenment.  Without these teachings there would be no path for us to follow and no possibility of bringing our suffering to an end.

As well, on this day, with minds of rejoicing and gratitude, we remember the extraordinary kindness of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, our Root Guru and Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition.  Venerable Geshe-la transmits Buddha’s profound wisdom and compassion to the people of the modern world in very practical and accessible ways through the methods of modern Kadampa Buddhism, which he introduced.

There will be three sessions of prayer and mantra recitation during the day. In the evening, we will conclude with Offering to the Spiritual Guide.

In each daytime session we will use the prayer booklet  Hundreds of Deities of the Joyful Land According to Highest Yoga Tantra and include the special request prayer Request to the Holy Spiritual Guide Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso from his Faithful Disciples.  We will spend some minutes reciting Venerable Geshe-la’s name mantra in each of these sessions.

The day will conclude with Offering to the Spiritual Guide dedicated to the flourishing of everything that Venerable Geshe-la established in our world.

Everyone is welcome to take part.  Please bring your mala if you have one, and download the prayer e-booklet if you wish: available free of charge from Tharpa publishing.
