4-PART COURSE

Of all the innumerable conceptual thoughts that arise from our root mind, the most harmful is self-cherishing and the most beneficial is the mind of cherishing others.  Self-cherishing is our mind thinking ‘I am important’ while neglecting others.  This self-centred view of the world is based on ignorance and does not correspond to reality.  All the problems of human society, such as war, crime, pollution, drug addiction, poverty, injustice, and disharmony within families, are the result of self-cherishing.

Through practicing the instructions contained within this course we can develop a realistic view of the world, based on an understanding of the equality and interdependence of all living beings.  Once we view each and every living being as important we will naturally develop good intentions towards them.  Open to everyone, regardless of previous experience.

SATURDAY FEB 29 / 10.00-11.15am

Why do we find it so difficult to cherish others?  The main reason why we do not cherish all living beings is that we are so preoccupied with ourself, and this leaves very little room in our mind to appreciate others.  If we wish to cherish others sincerely we have to reduce our obsessive self-concern.

SATURDAY MAR 7 / 10.00-11.15am

The disadvantages of self-cherishing  It is impossible to find a single problem, misfortune, or painful experience that does not arise from self-cherishing.  As Bodhisattva Shantideva says:  “All the happiness there is in the world arises from wishing others to be happy.  All the suffering there is in the world arises from wishing oneself to be happy.”

SATURDAY MAR 14 / 10.00-11.15am

Learning to cherish others Cherishing others is not so difficult – all we need to do is understand why we should cherish others and then make a firm decision to do so.  There are two main reasons why we need to cherish all living beings.  The first is that they have shown us immeasurable kindness, and the second is that cherishing them has enormous benefits.

SATURDAY MAR 21 / 10.00-11.15am

Equalizing self and others  There are three valid reasons why I should cherish myself and others equally:  All living beings have shown me great kindness in both this and previous lives.  Just as I wish to be free from suffering and experience only happiness, so do all other beings.  I am only one, whereas others are countless, so how can I cherish myself alone while I neglect to cherish others?
